Precision casting is also known as lost-wax casting. Its products are precise, complex, and close to the final shape of the part, allowing direct use with little or no machining. Therefore, investment casting is an advanced near-net-shape forming process.

In ancient China, the Prince Wu Ding, bronze containers, bronze lions, etc., were all masterpieces of investment casting. Since investment casting was used in industrial production in the 1940s, it has developed rapidly for half a century, especially in European and American countries. Besides aviation and weaponry departments, investment casting is applied in almost all industrial sectors, especially in electronics, petroleum, chemical engineering, energy, transportation, light industry, textiles, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, pumps, and valves. In recent years, China has also developed rapidly in this field.

The development of investment casting technology enables the production of not only small castings but also larger ones; the largest investment casting has a contour size approaching 2m, while its minimum wall thickness is less than 2mm. Meanwhile, investment castings are becoming more precise; in addition to linear tolerances, parts can also achieve high geometric tolerances. The surface roughness of investment castings is also decreasing, reaching Ra0.4μm.
